I'll answer this question with a question.

How great the impact could you make on the poorest of the population by offering something they truly need?

It is there that I would find myself. A million dollars? It wouldn't take that to begin a cycle fresh, clean and ever-lasting.

If I had a million dollars , I would hire someone to work with me and open up my ranch- church , where I would help animalis on a bigger scale and people , out in our rural area in a diffrent way than most churches do , with a open door at the chapel at all times and food for people and animals at all time . Because we do have enough placses for the homeless and runaways ect...

I think I would sponsor dollar match days in my community. First, I would go to my local grocery stores and offer to match dollar for dollar what a customer spends on that shopping trip. For example, if they purchase $125 in groceries, they could bring their receipt to a table set up for the purpose and exchange it for a Cash Check that they can immediately deposit in their bank. This offer would be good for up to $500 and could only be redeemed once per day. I would do that for a week. Then I'd help out the local businesses by doing the same in their shops although I might purchase gift certificates in equal amounts, or maybe for part of the total to encourage further shopping. I like the idea of donating large quantites of food to the Charity Food Pantries sponsered by the local churches and the Salvation Army. I think that if people were able to stock up their pantries basically for free and get some much needed supplies from their local hardware stores and clothing stores without the fear of bouncing checks for a month, it would really help to turn the attitudes around in the community; bring up the spirits of people who are having to do without because of the times; and keep our local economy going. Even one month can make a difference. And I think a million dollars may be just enough to do all of that.

I really resonate with what Andrew is saying. I can't help but look at you question through the veil of Jesus' parable of the talents. In this era of the pillars of the financial institutions laying in rubble...the church/ faith communities really need to re-think and re-tool the practice of mission. I would spread the money like planting seed, micro-investments in which the returns or the harvest would sustain and re-seed future ventures. This really is the economy of the Kingdom...to redeem, to restore, sustain, allow them to be co-partners and co-creators in building these Kingdom ventures. This is the growth of the mustard seed.

First thing that comes to my mind is to buy a million dollars worth of food, and give it away. I know not very sustainable, but it is what came to mind.

probably find a way to help the churches and mission organizations retool with an eye towards microbusiness, social enterprise in order to emerge from the recession equipped for long term sustainability.

what about a million for 100 10k micro-loans for that purpose? Track all 100 of them and create a community blog so everyone can cheer them on and learn from them.

I've been asked this question before, and I never know what to say. I wish I had sth as thoughtful and well planned out as Classicalgeek! Thank you for sharing. :)
